About the exhibition: The photographs on show are part of the Secrets of the Karst project, carried out by the Biom Association. It has been devised to make inhabitants of Dubrovačko-neretvanska County more aware of the mysterious world of the karst and familiar with this unique ecosystem and the importance of its preservation.

About the exhibition: This is a visiting exhibition produced by the Croatian Natural History Museum. The object of the exhibition is to draw attention to the problem of the disappearance and degradation of wetland habitats and the correlated reduction of the rich and diverse population of wetland birds. Wetlands are important bird habitats that are used during mating, nesting and feeding. The birds also use wetlands as sources of food and water, for rest and refuge and for social interaction. In terms of number and richness of protected and endangered species related to wetland habitats and aquatic ecosystems, Croatia is in the lead in European terms, as shown by the richly presented wetland birds at the exhibition.

About the exhibition: The exhibition has been transferred from the Zagreb-based Croatian Natural History Museum. The objective of the museum is to acquaint the general public with some wild flowers that humanity has through the ages used in both folk healing and in the pharmaceutical industry. It attempts to solve dilemmas about the healing powers and toxicity of wild plants in the light of the most recent scientific research and pharmaceutical knowledge. The answer that the exhibition provides inheres in the fact that a “simple” taken from nature can be a poison if it is used inexpertly. The exhibition also presents for the first time in Croatia exhibits of poisonous and therapeutic plants prepared in epoxy resins, in a new method developed by the curators of the botanical department of the CNHM. The exhibition includes the set-up of a herbalist’s room, a space in which the distillation and preparation of medicinal plants are carried out.

About the exhibition: The preparation of the leatherback turtle, Dermochelys coriacea (Vandelli, 1761) is among the most valuable of the natural history objects in the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum. According to the account of the Dubrovnik natural historian Baldo Kosić, the sea frog, as he called it, was taken in 1894 off the islet of Sveti Nikola close to Budva, Montenegro. In the two parts of the exhibition, “about the sea frog (Kosić, 1896)” and “A Cold Case of 1894”, the issue of its fate before its arrival in the museum is considered and research methods of Kosić’s time are compared with contemporary investigative methods.

About the exhibition: A visiting exhibition from the Split Natural History Museum shows the numerous roles of various insects in art, religion, mythology, belief, philosophy, folk traditions, folklore, society and culture in general. Motifs from the Croatian cultural heritage are incorporated in the context of the world phenomenon of cultural entomology. Thematic posters match display cases with prepared insects, wooden figures of them and examples of design inspired by insects and other motifs.

About the exhibition: The exhibition was created out of the art workshops of pupils of the Ruđer Bošković Episcopal Classics High School devoted to Bošković, the objective being for everything learned about him to be united in a visual event. The result is these visual approaches that have associations with the figure and work of the great man whose name the school bears, from works in which harmony in the relations of colour, curves and spherical bodies is sought, to a treatment of motifs related to Bošković’s youth and schooling in Dubrovnik. The exhibition was held so as to accompany the great international conference about Bošković.

About the exhibition: Describing the museum objects the tail and head of a tuna, Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus, 1758) that according to written data was caught in the bay of Mali Ston in 1897, more than a hundred years ago the natural historian Spiridon Brusina referred to the importance of what was then the Patriotic Museum. Following up the work of Dubrovnik natural historian Baldo Kosić, on the basis of these museum objects, of written historical sources and scientific knowledge about tuna, the dimensions of the tuna from the Museum were estimated and a model was made in life size in answer to the question “How Big was the Tuna in our Museum?” The story of two museum objects has brought to life the theme of Dubrovnik natural history from the time of Spiridon Brusina and Baldo Kosić, indicating something of the importance of their work. The first didactic exhibition links the cultural heritage and contemporary scientific knowledge, with a special reference to the protection of nature, and through the interdisciplinary approach in the production of the exhibition the role of the Museum as scientific and cultural institution is highlighted.
